Mary Martin

Donna Anna

Originally from Plymouth, Michigan, soprano Mary Martin currently resides in Bloomington, Indiana, where she works as an Assistant Professor of Voice at DePauw University. She is proud to be returning to SBLO to sing Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. This marks her fifth role with the company. A doctoral student of voice at Indiana University, Mary currently studies with Carol Vaness. Credits at IU include Alice (Falstaff),Governess (Turn of the Screw), Countess (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Hanne (Haydn’s The Seasons). At IU, she worked as an Associate Instructor for three years, and was also the two-time recipient of the prestigious Sarah Joan Tuccelli-Gilbert Memorial Fellowship.


Previous roles with SBLO include Bea (Three Decembers), Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor), and Despina (Cosi fan tutte). Mary has also performed with Central City Opera Company, the Janiec Opera Company, Arbor Opera Theater as Antonia (The Tales of Hoffmann), New York Opera Exchange, Opera MODO as Nannetta (Falstaff) and Gretel (Hansel and Gretel), Motor City Lyric Opera as the Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute), and concert work with the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, Midland Symphony Orchestra, and Livingston Symphony Orchestra. Mary earned her BM and MM degrees from the University of Michigan, where she had the honor of singing the Star-Spangled Banner for President Obama in the Michigan Football Stadium. Favorite roles from her time at Michigan include Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro), Amy (Little Women), and Nannetta (Falstaff). With Detroit Opera, Mary has performed as an outreach performer in many concerts, and as a chorister. Through Detroit Opera she also directs Operetta Remix, a summer program for high schoolers.


Mary currently maintains an active voice studio both at DePauw University and privately. Her students primarily focus on musical theater and classical repertoire and join her in the belief that storytelling and healthy technique are the cornerstones to excellent singing!
